The mantra “location, location, location” has a special meaning in the world of electrophysiology (EP). Depending on its location, it can sometimes be extremely challenging to find and fix a cardiac arrhythmia, but with Stereotaxis technology, “I am able to identify and reach the precise spot of abnormal electrical activity any place in the heart,” says Dr. Nayereh Pezeshkian, Associate Professor of Cardiac EP at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, CA. “Safety, of course, is paramount, but precision work is where the technology really shines.”
First introduced to the Stereotaxis robotic magnetic navigation system while at the University of Indiana, Dr. Pezeshkian considers her experience there a great “jumping off point” for her work at UC Davis, which began using the system in 2010. At the time, it was one of just a few sites in the Western US with Stereotaxis capabilities.
“I consider the highlight of my work at UCD the performance of a wide variety of complex invasive EP procedures. Arrhythmias are interesting – each patient is different and poses a new case to solve,” she says.
RMN has allowed her to perform this complex procedure with excellent results and achieve what is of greatest importance: patients experiencing arrhythmia-free survival off of antiarrhythmic drugs. “Helping someone’s quality of life is very satisfying,” says Dr. Pezeshkian.
